New album in 2012! Jeff Stinco, for That

By: Leticia PedrosoFiled in: Interview, New album, ShowsComments: (0)

In a interview, the guitarrist Jeff Stinco told some intereseting things about the band, the composing of the new album, the recording of the music Jet Lag with the american singer Natasha Bedingfield, wotking with his idols Mark Hoppus and Rivers Cuomo and also showed happiness with the case of blocking their music in China:

The Best-Laid Plan

Jeff Stinco on getting lucky and Natasha Bedingfield stripping off

It’s been over 12 years since Canadian pop punk band Simple Plan first formed, but it’s the first time the Platinum-certified quintet is performing in Shanghai. Ahead of their show this month, lead guitarist Jeff Stinco chats about near-death experiences, getting mobbed and singing in French.

The new album, Get Your Heart On!, sounds very arousing.
It was meant to be a simple, fun record, but that was actually quite hard! It was difficult to throw back to the energy of the first two records. Compared to the last album, there’s more of a summer feel to it.

So you’re saying your third record, Simple Plan, was less fun and energetic?
The third record is an introspective record. There’s a lot of exploration. We’re trying different things. I personally see it as a transitional record. It’s very hard for a band to find its identity and to stick to it, but also try different avenues.

What made you decide to release your recent single, ‘Jet Lag,’ in both English and French versions?

Why not French? Our first language is French, even though the first bands that influenced us were American. We were kind of emulating, in the early days, the bands that influenced us. And now we’re at a point where we try new things.

There are several songs featuring guest vocalists on the new album. Did you actually meet the artists or were their parts recorded separately?

Pierre, our singer, spent a lot of time with Natasha Bedingfield to work parts out. Sebastien and I spent time with Marie-Mai. The best part was shooting the video [for 'Jet Lag']. I was kind of shy during the video shoot because I was thinking ‘you girls are not wearing much!’ I was trying to be gentlemanly about it. But afterwards we had a rap party and Natasha Bedingfield just threw it down, she was just like one of the boys.

Who were you most excited to work with?
Mark Hoppus from Blink-182, he was definitely very important for us. But having Rivers Cuomo from Weezer was an honor. He’s got such a distinctive voice and we’re all such big fans. There are moments in the song that are very Weezer-ish.

If you could work with any artist in the future, who would it be?
It would be great to work with Pink. I think her voice is very strong, powerful. She has fans that are very intense and she treats them in a very respectful way. Gwen Stefani from No Doubt would also be someone we’d appreciate working with.

Seems like you’re eyeing the ladies. Your second album was entitled Still Not Getting Any…Are you getting any now?
I sure hope so! At our age it would be pathetic if we didn’t! Some of us have girlfriends, some of us are single. We always find a way to manage. It’s very manageable…

What’s the most rock and roll thing that’s ever happened to you?
One of our bus drivers fell asleep at the wheel on the way to Chicago. The bus almost flipped. It reminds me of Almost Famouswhen the plane is about to crash.
In Malaysia, I remember having a signing in the music store and there was a riot on our exit. People were banging on the bus as we were leaving and security asked us to bend down because the windows were about to shatter. People were running after the bus.

Some of your songs have been banned by China’s Ministry of Culture. What was your reaction when you heard that?
My first reaction was, really? Why? To me, it was interesting that we got banned with very big artists like Lady Gaga. The news made the world go to us.
We respect the government’s response and the way they handled it. And at the end of the day, fans will find a way to listen to our music. We have a very social mission without the band but within the music there’s not really a very strong political content. There’s very innuendo-driven content but there’s nothing very sexual to what we do.

Earlier this year, you had to cancel tour dates in China because of Pierre Bouvier’s vocal injury. What happened?
As a band you have to make tough decisions and sometimes you expect too much. Pierre did too much and his vocal chords got strained. Luckily, he reacted quickly and took the time off that he needed. We accepted that and waited for him to recover. And we readjusted our way of thinking. Over the years we may have pushed the machine a little too hard.

You’re set to continue touring until well into next year. Do you have concerns about your future health?
For sure. But at the end of the day you want to put out the best show possible. In the past, the philosophy of the band was to do everything, 300 shows a year. The schedule now is intense but it’s nothing like it was before.

Did you cut back because you’re just getting too old?
Oh, we’re so old! No, I think we’re better now than ever. I look at pictures from before and think ‘Oh wow, you partied your ass off!’ Realistically, you just can’t be doing 300 shows three years straight. At some point it’s just too much.

A number of songs on your new album make it sound like you’re sick of touring.
Human beings have a knack for complaining. We’re not an exception to that. When you’re at home you want to be on the road and when you’re on the road you want to be at home. Touring is definitely a lot of work and luckily for us Skype exists! Lot of advantages to technology!
You have to remember that songs are written at a moment of vulnerability. And in songs you tend to complain about the bad sides of your life. Good moments with your family, you’re not writing those sides. That’s why the album reflects that. That’s not to say that we are always depressed!

What are you most looking forward to about coming to Shanghai?
A modern city! I’ve seen a lot of pictures and testimonies and travel blogs, but I’m kind of curious to see how our fans at the shows will be reacting.
We always say that fans around the world react the same way, but it’s not true. In Brazil, it’s pure madness, a lot of people recognizing us on the street, fans basically locking us into a building! Elsewhere it takes a while to rile up the crowd.

Plans for the future?
2012 will be no exception to our hectic schedule. We’re playing a full tour of Canada, US, South America. And at the very end of they year, we’ll be recording our new album.

Having toured so extensively, you must be an expert on all worldly matters. Who would win in a fight between a polar bear and a tiger?
I would bet on the polar bear, I think; bet on strength and massiveness. I would say the polar bear would succeed on that level. Tigers would tend to be speedy, but I think overall the polar bear.

Simple Plan songs are forbidden in China

By: FelipeFiled in: New album, NewsComments: (1)

The Chinese Government have forbidden four songs of the new album of Simple Plan, Get Your Heart On! The justificative for this action that have forbidden other artists like Lady Gaga (the songs The Edge of Glory, Hair, Marry The Night, Bloody Mary and Judas), Backstreet Boys, Beyoncé and Britney Spears, is that the songs could “cause damage to the security of the country”.

Since the year 2000 all the songs are analised before they’ve being released on internet and other kind of media with the intention of decrease the piratary on internet and other bad intentions.

The songs that were banned from the country are: Can’t Keep My Hands Off You, Loser Of The Year, Freaking Me Out e You Suck At Love with the justificative that they’re of an erotic content and bad taste.

The band drummer, Chuck Comeau, commented about the topic on Twitter demonstrating a big revolt with the Chinese atittude.

We of Simple Plan BR wanna know, what do you think of this chinese atittude?

Seattlepi.com about the Get Your Heart On!

By: FelipeFiled in: New albumComments: (0)

With the new album’s release, the guys can’t rest anymore. This time, the website SeattlePi made a review of the new album, that you can check out here:

Simple Plan makes music for a certain set of fans and rarely tries to broaden the net. Pop punk in general, the type of pabulum done to death by Avril Lavigne and these French Canadian guys, is generally about distilling something decent into its most squelchy elements. The results are clear and flavourless, but in some cases refreshment is possible.

With Simple Plan’s fourth studio record, Get Your Heart On!, there are moments of refreshment to be had but the substance is impossible to locate.

The first thing that many will notice about Get Your Heart On! Is the appearance of a pile of guest stars. K’Naan, Rivers Cuomo of Weezer, Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, and Natasha Bedingfield of “Unwritten” fame all appear to varying degrees of effect.

What’s interesting is that the name on the aforementioned list that shouldn’t work actually works most. Bedingfield’s appearance on “Jet Lag” is the album’s most enjoyable song. Vocalist Pierre Bouvier and Bedingfield trade lines back and forth nicely and the song is quite sweet, amazingly enough. Sure, it’s as clichéd as humanly possible and the lyrics are bland, but the cut is ridiculously catchy and should please fans with its balmy feel. French Canadian listeners should check out a Francophone version of the cut featuring Marie-Mai, by the way.

Also in the “not terrible” category is “Loser of the Year,” another impeccably clichéd piece of work that bounds with catching energy and lunging guitars. It won’t win the band new fans, but it’s a head-nodding tune that isn’t offensive to the ears.

Unfortunately, Simple Plan has to venture into territory that is, to be honest, quite bad. The slower songs, numbers like “This Song Saved My Life” and “Gone Too Soon,” come off excessively maudlin and cheesy. I don’t doubt that these songs have special meaning for listeners and I do know of more than a few listeners who’ve come to some sort of revelation due to Simple Plan songs, but musically they don’t work.

It’s not that emotional songs have no place in pop punk, of course, but I do question their place on a record called Get Your Heart On!. Simple Plan still lacks structure in putting out an album, stuffing mischievous pop punk ditties arbitrarily next to miserable ballads without much worry for how it all fits together.

While I was stunned that this record didn’t make my ears bleed, I wasn’t surprised that these guys still haven’t evolved to the point where an album matters as a whole. This really is a succession of songs, some of which are more effective and fun than others.

Interview for Global Grind

By: Leticia PedrosoFiled in: Interview, New albumComments: (0)

Check out below a funny interview with Pierre Bouvier, in the day the album was released.

Canadian pop-punk band Simple Plan took a brief hiatus from music, but they’re back!

Simple Plan’s fourth album “Get Your Heart On” hits store shelves today and GlobalGrind caught up with Simple Plan’s lead singer Pierre Bouvier to talk about his celebrity crushes, growing up in Canada, his favorite rappers, and of course their new album!

For more music from Simple Plan, click here.

Check out the exclusive interview below!

GlobalGrind: The new album “Get Your Heart On” comes out June 21st. How do you feel?

Simple Plan: It is so exciting!

How amped are you?

I am so amped I can’t even contain myself.

What’s been the inspiration behind the new album?

The inspiration, if I can narrow it down to something, I would say it’s about having a good time. We wanted the record to be fun. We were thinking about playing new songs for the next year and a half, two years, so we wanted it to be upbeat and have something we would have a good time doing for the next year and a half.

How old were you when you first started making music?

Well, I started my first band with the drummer of Simple Plan right now. I think we were thirteen, fourteen. We recorded our first album in my parent’s basement. My brother had a little bit of recording knowledge and his friend did as well. We recorded out of my parent’s basement and we had a little tape. That was in 1993 that came out, so that was like 18 years ago. Crazy.

Do you guys have any funny stories about the times that you were thirteen in your mother’s house?

Yeah, we had some great times. We would play to these local shows and our parents would drive us to the shows. We’d pack up the drums in the cars and I remember the first little tour that we did was called Ramp Rage and we were playing with this punk band called Good Riddance and another band called Trigger Happy and my parents were nice enough to drive us to the four gigs in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. I come from a family of travelers and my dad always had a Winnebago and he’d pack up the Winnebago and we’d pull up to these guys that were in vans. And we would show up in our Winnebago with my parents and their dogs. It was pretty funny we were like fourteen year old kids and they were like, who the fuck is this band?

I really want a Winnebago so bad. It’d be pretty cool to just get one and drive across country.

It’s pretty awesome. I think that I definitely want to get one too. When I was younger I’ve seen more than 95% of Americans. I’ve seen more of America than they have. By the time I was thirteen, fourteen I’ve been to the Grand Canyon, Vegas, California, Florida, all the East Coast, down to Santa Fe, New Mexico and all that, it was crazy.

There’s a lot of amazing artists that have recently emerged from Canada. Is there something in the water or what’s going on?

I think it’s the weather. It’s so cold all year round, there’s nothing else to do but put together a band and make music. Honestly, I feel like if you live somewhere where the weather’s very hot and nice, the last thing you’re thinking about is getting together in a basement and rocking out to music all day long. You just want to go to the beach. I think the weather has to do with it and the fact that it’s just a really good scene up there. It’s hard to explain. It could be the food too.

…to be continued.
